What is Fear?

What is Fear?

False.Evidence.Appearing.Real.The medical definition of fear is a chain reaction in the brain that starts with stressful stimulus and ends with the release of chemicals that cause a racing heart, fast breathing and energized muscles, among other things, also known as the fight or flight response. The stimulus could be a spider, a knife at your throat, an auditorium full of people waiting for you to speak or the sudden thud of your front door against the door frame. The process of creating fear begins with a scary stimulus and ends with the fight-or-flight response. But there are at least two paths between the start and the end process.Let's take a closer look at how fear is created. What Causes Fear? While it is important to be aware of potential and real threats, it is as important to react appropriately to them. For most of us, our initial startle response calms as soon as we realize that there is no actual threat or danger. There are many for who fear became maladaptive, because of this they struggle with anxiety, phobias and panic attacks. What forms do fears take? Fears come in a number of packages for people who have low self-esteem, such as the fear of..*places. school, church, crowds, planes or enclosed places & heights above or below ground.*animals. snakes, rats, mice.*objects. guns, knives, computers.*people. men or women, strangers, pleasing others, losing others.*events. nuclear holocaust, war, crime.*atmosphere. dark, shadowy, gloomy, being alone, strange or unknown setting.*family member. getting ill, being lost, running away.*disaster. fire, hurricane, lightening, losing job or being fired, injury or pain, death.*reactions or responses to self. rejection, disapproval, not being liked, disappointing others, being ignored, being the real "YOU".*Feelings about oneself. guilt, unworthy, unstable, weak, useless, unwanted.*The unknown. new things, technology, change, making decisions, growing old, retirement, inactivity. What are some negative consequences of fear?Fear can..Immobilize decision making.Prevent you from overcoming your insecurity, prevent you from trusting others, and prevent you from love.Fear that is excessive can become crippling, and even make you feel like escaping when it's not appropriate to do so.When fear gets out of control, or when we fear something that cannot actually harm us, it can escalate to a point where it will become apparent in our daily activities.Fear is no longer modifiable if we are constantly afraid of events that haven't happened yet.Future-oriented fear is known as anxiety. While fear happens at the moment danger arises, anxiety is characterized by apprehension because we're unsure about what's going to happen and unaware of your gift to attract your desired life by thinking and acting in a Certain Way.Fear is merely an emotion, a very strong emotion to be sure, but simply an emotion.Fear helps us avoid dangerous situations while we are children. As we mature into adulthood self-empowerment suggests we examine our fears.Do our fears serve us or hinder us? Many of us live each day moving from one fear to another, without realizing its impact and effect on our lives.Fear robs us of our creativity. While in a state of fear, our body deploys its resources to deal with the feared event, making it difficult to focus on anything else. All who have feared for the health and the survival of a loved one or have feared a life changing event has experienced this.It seems difficult to be positive, creative, and energetic while watching severe weather or at the bedside of an ill loved one.\.Excessive focus on a feared event will attract to us exactly the event which we fear. This is the Law of Attraction. what we focus on we create. We will go more into the Law of Attraction later in this course. Our thoughts send off a frequency a vibration of energy that attracts events of similar frequency. We lose a wonderful gift when we focus on a feared future event, the "present".Since feared events are always future events, when you focus on fears you fail to appreciate the present (Gift) moment.Unfortunately, you're missing the beauty of life one second at a time.Life is the present (pre-sent), it is the (NOW).All we ever have is the pre-sent (NOW).That is the gift of life. The past is over; the experience we carry with us.The future is uncertain to the unconscious while the future is created by the consciously aware beings.Fear is like sitting in a rocking chair; you use a lot of energy but you never get anywhere. The Jedi Master Yoda so wisely tells us "Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate and hate leads to suffering." Today's the day you decide that enough is enough; and make the choice that you you'll live your life with purpose rather than fear.Make the choice to live a life filled with love, joy, and happiness. To free yourself from your fears these tips should help..Remind yourself that F.E.A.R is (False Evidence Appearing Real) Feel yourself "Being" Courageous Declare out loud that you are releasing this fear from your mind Create positive thoughts If you succumb to your fears they will prevent you from reaching your full potential.Once you face your fear, the origin of your fear, and the likelihood of it manifesting, you will move toward your goals without the road blocks of unnecessary fear.

Chemotherapy Gave Us A Gift of Time

Chemotherapy Gave Us A Gift of Time

In December 1999, my beloved husband of 32 years was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma and given a prognosis of 3 to 9 months. He was a former Wittenoom child who at the tender age of seven lived in Wittenoom for period of seven short months.Tragically it was long enough for him to inhale the deadly blue asbestos dust that would ultimately take his life.As Brian's disease progressed, the tumor pressed against his esophagus making it almost impossible for him to swallow. For a short period of time, dilatation was given to stretch the opening, thereby enabling him to manage a pureed diet. However when these dilations were no longer successful, we were told that chemotherapy was the only option. It was painfully obvious that unless chemotherapy could shrink the tumor, Brian's death would be imminent.Although we had no choice, the thought of chemotherapy was frightening. We had heard stories of extreme nausea and hair loss, and the added fear of the unknown intensified our suffering. There were many questions. How would it affect us? Would it work? How long will it go on? Will Brian ever be able to eat normally again? For Brian, chemotherapy was never promised as a cure but as a trial, offered to him in the hope of shrinking the tumor, thereby enabling him to eat and drink and hopefully, to afford him "quality of life" for the remainder of his life.Brian began chemotherapy in January 2001; his reaction to the first round of treatment was dramatic; he vomited continuously and was unable to retain his oral medication and needed to be hospitalized.Unable He remained in hospital for a short time during which the Pain Management Specialist attached to the Palliative Care Unit was able to bring his symptoms under control. The medication he prescribed effectively controlled Brian's nausea and when taken prior to further chemotherapy sessions, prevented further bouts of nausea from occurring.Without fear of side effects, Brian welcomed his chemotherapy sessions and the resulting benefits of the treatment soon became obvious.By the end of the second round of chemotherapy it was obvious that the treatment had shrunk the tumor; the changes in his condition and disposition were amazing; he felt and looked so much better, was able to eat meat and enjoy food again.I could not get over the change in him.Excerpt from my diary..March 2001.Brian is feeling so much better. He is able to eat meat and enjoy food again.Chemotherapy HAS shrunk the tumor.I cannot get over the change in him.It is a precious gift and I am so grateful for it.Brian has been amazing. The chemo and nausea medication tire him for a bit but within a few days he is back on top and his general well-being is amazing.Oh the joy of seeing him able to eat again! The chemo has definitely given him better quality of life. His appetite is amazing!I realized at this time that despite all of our fears regarding chemotherapy, it had worked well for us.It had given us a precious gift of time.A special "time out" from the pain and suffering of it all. There was quality of life and we were determined to live it to the full.Excerpt from my diary. There's laughter now in our days for we have grown stronger. We have learned to push our grief away and to live each moment of every single day, for we know that tomorrow may never come and that our goodnight may well be our goodbye.

Business Gifts - Take the Fear Out of Buying For Female Bosses

Business Gifts - Take the Fear Out of Buying For Female Bosses

Whether you are male or female, the idea of buying for a female boss can be a little unnerving.Maybe you've always just bought your bosses a nice wallet or an organizer, but it can be a little difficult if you have suspicions that your female boss might want something with a little more style. While at the end of the day she should take any well-meaning gift with grace, there are a few things that you can do to make your chances of pleasing her a little bit better. When you are thinking of buying gifts for female bosses, remember that they are people with likes and dislikes, and there is no reason that you necessarily need to give them a gift that is bases solely on their sex.Take some time to take a look at what desk accessories she has or what pictures she has hanging up.This can tell you a lot more about her as a person and her style, and you'll soon realize what you can do in order to really get her a gift that complements the desk accessories that she already has.If your boss is always complaining about having trouble when it comes to organization, think about getting her some organizers or a padfolio. You might also get her a marker board to keep daily notes on, though this can be a gift for the whole office if you put it somewhere where everyone can take a crack at it.You'll also find that there are many different things for you to choose from when you are considering if your boss has a family.Consider picnic baskets, stadium blankets, or even something as thoughtful as a pet carrier. For a more jokey gift, consider getting her a portable decision maker, a little spinner that will point to things like "buy," "sell," "yes," "no," and "maybe." While these are quite cute, humorous little gifts, make sure that your boss doesn't have a record for indecision.Never give anyone a gift that points to a specific weakness and never give them a gift that might speak to an area that they are sensitive about!Take some time and you'll soon see that buying gifts for female bosses is as simple as buying gifts for anyone else.Be sure that you are in a good place to buy the perfect gift.

Jesus Gives Us The Gift Of His Holiness

Jesus Gives Us The Gift Of His Holiness

JESUS GIFT OF HOLINESS GIVEN TO US.WHAT DO WE KNOW OF HOLY?Ephesians 1. 3-4.Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed.Us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,.Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should .Be holy and without blame before Him in love, .Jesus Purchased us With His Own Blood.Holiness has long been one of the main issues of Christians. One side says that we must obey His commandments in order to be holy, while the other side says that grace abounds. One side also says that the words of Jesus will bring unity when the bible clearly shows that when Jesus spoke it brought division. Those of us who rely on our own brand of holiness brought about by our own obedience will always be against the thought that it is by grace alone that we are made holy. The bible is very clear about rightly dividing the word of God.(2 Tim.2.15) The Holy Spirit never makes a mistake, if He had wanted us to interpret this passage to mean to rightly interpret scripture then He would not have said divide.Jesus divided everything, time, covenants and most important sin and holiness. We have been taught to fear God and by doing this holiness will become ours.Obey all of His commands and we will be holy.Jesus Himself defined the fear of God as the worship of God.(Matthew 4.10) When we feed upon the bread of life, Jesus Christ, He will manifest Himself in us and cause us to obey without any effort on our part.Jesus paid the price for all sin, in fact, He overpaid. The wrath of God was poured out on Him at the cross and when God's wrath had run out and the full price had been paid; the sacrifice remained.Jesus then, after absorbing the whole penalty for us, cried out, "IT IS FINISHED!" He then bowed His head, finding rest in saving us, and dismissed His Spirit like the King that He is.I believe in being holy.I also believe that holiness only comes to us as we look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. As we behold Him in all of His glory and majesty, He by His Spirit transforms us into His image. His holiness is part of His gift to us, the gift of righteousness that He died to give us.Start seeing yourself holy, because He is holy and watch His gift of righteousness come in and transform your life.Thank you and Be Blessed,.Joe D.Willis.

The Gift Of Fear by Gavin De Becker

The Gift Of Fear by Gavin De Becker

Last Christmas, a friend of mines mother and I were discussing books that we had recently read as I was trying to find a new read for myself. She struck up the discussion on The Gift of Fear, one of her recent reads.I remember her telling me the book was about all of these past case studies of violent crimes and how the people (mostly women) involved [as victims] were able to use their sixth sense to get out of or avoid the situations altogether. It sounded really interesting and I was really excited to make my way to the nearest book store to pick up a copy. The Gift of Fear, a non-fiction best seller written by Gavin de Becker, was published in 1997 and since then has gained audiences young and old all over the world.De Becker, a security specialist who has worked for major organizations including the United States Supreme Court Police, the United States Marshals Service, the Defense Intelligence Agency and the Central Intelligence Agency uses his years of study and analysis on violent crimes to point out warning signs and self-defense mechanisms that we have instilled within us.The book itself outlines a variety of situations in which we may find ourselves in at any given point of our lives; the walk home alone; the firing of an employee; the stranger in the elevator.De Becker discusses the impact that our own intuition has on us to predict whether or not these types of situations could in fact turn violent. It s interesting to see, as de Becker points out, that in our adult lives, we have the same intuitive behaviors as a child or a senior citizen but as adults, we try to rationalize with ourselves, talk ourselves out of scared thoughts and feelings, and convince ourselves that we live in a world where violent crimes couldn't actually happen to us.De Becker discusses this in great detail in his book and also goes into depth about what to do in situations where you didn't listen to your intuition and how to get out of potentially life threatening scenarios. It s a fascinating and sobering examination of an extremely important but easily and often ignored margin of life.I think the most interesting thing that de Becker points out is that we all have the ability to commit violent crimes so by taking a look at ourselves, and trying to empathize with the bad guy, we can better predict the outcome of the situation and how to best handle it on the spot.He points out that empathy is somewhat key to survival first; other steps then follow.I highly recommend this book for its interesting content and easy to read style.Additionally, it s won several awards and been endorsed by both Amazon and Oprah as great reads and excellent pieces to add to any self-defense collection. It will surely leave you feeling stronger, safer, and more confident to deal with many potentially threatening situations.

Fear and Anger Reveal Gift - Gratitude Transforms Everything

Deeply buried under the limiting patterns of your life is a gift.As you send spinning gratitude to the limiting patterns, the fear or anger and things you don't want, a gift is revealed. The catch is to go deep enough. The layers of toxins and old patterns created a shell of perceived safety around and through your body. This old layer of perceived safety can be filled with patterns that are really hurtful, dysfunctional or downright destructive. These layers were laid down when you were a tiny child, when you had no ability to differentiate. If anger was the family pattern, anger is in your nervous system and this pattern of anger is what is known as safety. So when a stressful situation arises, your body will retreat to anger, because that is what your nervous system knows.Until these patterns are cleared, your nervous system will continue to get triggered, no matter how great your intention.Spinning vortexes of gratitude unscrew the layers of old patterns, fear or anger that have held your old stuff in place.Gratitude transforms all - the good, the bad and the totally unacceptable. The good increases while the bad and totally unacceptable transform with the high frequency of gratitude. As the gratitude spinners twirl deeper into your body, more crusty old parts fall off.The old patterns come off in layers so your body can adjust and recalibrate to a higher level of functioning. If everything came off at once, that would cause more trauma to your nervous system. The gradual melting away of the old with gratitude creates integration and ease in your body. The limitation created by family dysfunction, your fear or anger has created a framework for your life's development. This inner mechanism has been in place so you could navigate in the world. If your entire essence was revealed at birth or early childhood, it would have been too hard to discover your individual self. The vast sea of non-differentiated oneness is too great a field to individuate in.Once you become an individual, then the limiting framework that created your life can be dissolved. As you send thanks to the layers of patterns that have formed who you are, your authentic self can now come out radiantly glowing with ease and grace. What is revealed is your shinning magnificent essence.

The Gift of the Holy Spirit - Fear

The Gift of the Holy Spirit - Fear

There are different motives for climbing the stairway to Heaven. The first incentive to begin to climb up from the sickness and vomit of sin -- is fear. This kind of fear - slavish fear -- is the fear of punishment or of suffering. When a person begins to see the penalty for sin, recognizes his or her vices, failures and sins, and begins to understand there is punishment for sin, he/she will begin to hate the sin rather than embrace it.Slavish fear in and by itself is not enough for the soul to stay above the temptations of the world, the incentives of the flesh and the influences of the demon. Those motivated only by slavish fear begin to climb out of sin, but are climbing imperfectly.Slavish fear must be transformed into holy fear. What is Holy Fear?Holy Fear, or Fear of the Lord, is one of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. It is also known as "wonder and awe," or "awe of God." In Proverbs 1.7 and 9.10, the fear of the Lord is called the beginning of wisdom and knowledge.Fear of God fills the soul with a sovereign respect for God and makes one dread above all things, offending God.It is a fear of separating oneself from God.(Thomas Aquinas). To gain the Kingdom of God, one must unite fear to love -- which is Holy Fear. This is powerful and effective because it unites us with the Strength of God.And the Strength of God is Love.Love joined to fear is transforming and lifts the soul to perfect love and to the Kingdom and helps one (and those around us) climb perfectly.Holy fear is not slavish fear, it is not a fear instilling dissension, disagreement, panic or terror.Holy fear is a loving response to God's love."The church throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria was at peace. It was being built up and walked in the fear of the Lord, and with the consolation of the Holy Spirit it grew in numbers." Acts 9.31.Do you find yourself falling into the same sin pattern again and again? Do you ask yourself why? The answer is.Seek a greater love. The Law of Fear was the Old Law given to Moses in the Old Testament. The Law was built upon fear.Under the Law, if you sinned, you suffered the penalty, and you most likely suffered it in this life.Deuteronomy 30.15 The New Law, which is the fulfillment of the Old came about through Jesus Christ and His atonement for sin upon the Cross. The Old Law was not dissolved by Jesus Christ, but was fulfilled by Him, because His Saving Work was built upon love.Jesus said, "I have not come to destroy the Law but to fulfill it." Mt 5.17.Jesus fulfilled the Old Law by joining it -- the law of fear -- with the law of love.He fulfilled in salvation history, on a grand scale, what you and I must fulfill within ourselves on a personal level, in faith, hope and love, being joined to Him.Thus the imperfectness of slavish fear -- the fear of suffering and punishment - will be transformed into reverential fear, which is, the fear of sinning, the fear of offending God.How is holy fear cultivated? By gazing upon Jesus Christ crucified.Love is cultivated by seeing Christ crucified and His love for us."How can I go on sinning in the face of love like that?" Love is cultivated if the soul, when awakening from sin, will lift her gaze to Christ crucified. The soul will see in faith the love God has for the soul and seeing God as supreme Goodness and Love, the soul will begin to recognize the reward of virtue, and take the next step upward.Soon the soul feels the slavish fear leave her and holy fear begin to replace it.The soul feels the forgiveness of sin, the refreshing Strength of the Holy Spirit and recognizes the Love inside."If He is here, in my bosom, I must be on the right path.".God is supreme Goodness and Love.Only if one turns to God and is united with Him, can the person remain in God.Thus holy fear is necessary for us stay above the flesh, world and temptations of the demon Happy is the man who has seen the greatness of God, has touched His Holiness, has sensed His unlimited Power, has encountered the sovereign Majesty."During Advent, a great yearning for God arose in my soul.My spirit rushed toward God with all its might.During that time, the Lord gave me much light to know His attributes."The first attribute which the Lord gave me to know is His holiness. His holiness is so great that all the Powers and Virtues tremble before Him.The pure spirits veil their faces and lose themselves in unending adoration, and with one single word they express the highest form of adoration; that is - Holy. The holiness of God is poured out upon the Church of God and upon every living soul in it, but not in the same degree. There are souls who are completely penetrated by God, and there are those who are barely alive. The second kind of knowledge which the Lord granted me concerns His justice. His justice is so great and penetrating that it reaches deep into the heart of things, and all things stand before Him in naked truth, and nothing can withstand Him.The third attribute is love and mercy. And I understood that the greatest attribute is love and mercy. It unites the creature with the Creator. This immense love and abyss of mercy are made know in the Incarnation of the Word and in the Redemption [of humanity], and it is here that I saw this as the greatest of all God's attributes." Sister Faustina, Divine Mercy in My Soul, Diary, Marian Press, page 100, #180.Holy fear.Cultivate it.Pray for it.Prepare for it.Today, the gift of Holy Fear must be again kindled in hearts.Modern man has lost the sense of sin.(Archbishop Fulton Sheen).Today sin is often promulgated (taught, published, put into law, decreed) and declared as a good! This is particularly evident in the laws that are being changed in our country, disseminated by the press, television and entertainment industries, and supported by many in the political and social arenas. It is a grave error not to warn each other of sin, in particular, deadly sin, because if the awareness of sin is not taught, or even more pernicious, if evil is substituted for that which is holy, taught and accepted as a good, then the Law of love becomes the "Law" of the world, the flesh and the demon. If evil is accepted as a good, this will lead to the death of the soul, which is damnation, because the impetus for repentance from sin is not there and there is no incentive for change.Sin which is not confessed, which is not atoned for by perfect contrition (sorrow for sin) will not go unpunished.Sin does not go unpunished! We are in a time of mercy as we walk the earth, but when we die, we will face the time of justice.Compromise with sin and teaching the acceptance of sin, rather than the warning and call for the personal and global rejection of sin is a grave error! Who will put our feet upon the stairway to Heaven? How will we recognize the sin we are in? When will we (as a nation) make the next step to perfect love? Pray for Fear! Your prayer is necessary.Your prayer will be heard. We each must ask for the gift of the Holy Fear, (Wonder and Awe) for ourselves, for our families, and for the USA.Philippians 2.12.Work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure."The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" (Prov.1.7).And love is wisdom. Those motivated only by fear, slavish fear, begin to climb out of sin, but are climbing imperfectly.Do you find yourself falling into the same sin patterns again and again? The answer is.Seek a greater love.

When You Know Something is Wrong But Don't Know How You Know? Empathic Connections

When You Know Something is Wrong But Don

Probably the most important lesson I have learned in developing my intuition is to trust and act on "knowing without knowing why." Most often this empathic connection; an acute feeling sense, happens between family members and close friends. But it can also happen with our pets.A few nights ago this happened when my daughter's friend was hanging out.The four of us sat down to have dinner. One minute we were immersed in conversation and the next we were silenced."Hold on a minute" my daughter's friend said."I think I hear my dog barking"."I didn't hear anything" I said."Are you sure"? "Yes, I know his bark and I have this funny feeling that something is wrong".Have you had this happen; have you received an internal distress signal that interrupts your normal activity? You have this strong sense that things are out of sorts, you feel alarmed, now what do you do? Experience is our best teacher. And from years of listening, coaching, and going through this personally, I recommend you "heed the call".In the book "The Gift of Fear and Other Survival Signals That Protect Us from Violence" Gavin De Becker says,."When you honor accurate intuitive signals and evaluate them without denial, you need not be wary. You come to trust that you will be notified if there is something worthy of your attention. The role of fear in your life lessons as your mind and body come to know that you will listen. We can welcome fear with a "thank you God for a signal I can act on".Amazed as I was that Jaz could hear her dog, I urged her to go take a look.I was worried because no one was home at her house. Her mom was working late.So I turned on our outside light, stood by the front door and waited while she and my daughter went to check things out.My daughter kept phone contact with Jaz as she walked inside.I saw the lights go on in the garage and both girls returned together a few minutes later."What happened? Was your dog okay" I asked."I am glad I went home" she said."I found my dog trapped under our bikes in the garage. He must have jumped up to get something and the bikes toppled on him.He wasn't hurt, but he could have been struggling to get free"."I am so glad you heard him, and trusted your feelings.I dread to think what could have happened if you hadn't" I said. Some years back, I remember suddenly feeling pressure in my head, and tightness in my upper chest.I had this persistent thought, insisting that I call a friend I have known since High School. We'd kept in touch and I visited when I went east, but it had been awhile.Part of me was hesitant because I felt uncertain about what I was going to say.But I couldn't get past this horrid feeling that had a grip hold on me.I dialed her number and my friend's husband answered the phone."Hi, this is Stephanie from California. Is Bes there"? "No, she just left. Her mother had a heart attack.Bes is on her way to the hospital right now".The news was shocking on so many levels, as you can imagine! I called within minutes of Bes getting this awful news, "knowing" something was wrong.Bes' mother played such an influential role in my life growing up.She always encouraged my interest in metaphysics. When I visited their house we had tea and talked about Edgar Cayce, Carl Jung, and Ram Dass.Throwing the I Ching coins and interpreting the hexagrams became a ritual. And in spite of time passing and the distance between us, my connection to her remained intact on the deepest level.

        Turning Fear Into Action

        Turning Fear Into Action

Like a roadblock, fear functions to stop us in our tracks.Whether the fear of being alone, of making a mistake or of trying something new, when we allow fear to dictate our response, it is likely we will stay exactly where we are, which is often a place of longing for change but terrified to act. This dilemma is common in people who aspire to follow their dreams and leave unfulfilling jobs for work that is meaningful.Fears of being broke, letting others down or making a mess of things are widespread and, if left to fester, these fears can run your life, leaving you trapped in not only a boring job but beyond that, in a dull and predictable life. While fear can function to keep us from making poor judgements, it is often a roadblock when a person yearns to make a career transition. There is a way to overcome the fear, however; let's look at how one woman did it.Leda was frustrated in a repetitive administrative job, but terrified to follow a dream she harboured to start a small side business, creating gift baskets for office wedding and baby showers.Caught up in her fears, she was unable to see beyond them to a more fulfilling life. With some coaching, Leda started to imagine and put into words the life she longed for, but was still convinced that "other people can start businesses, not me! I'm only a secretary.".What she realized, as she became aware of how her fear-based self-talk was getting in the way of even learning more about launching a small business, let alone starting one, she started to inventory the skills she had that would propel her towards success; skills such as her excellent time management and organizational acumen. With a vision and a sense that she had some strengths, she was ready to take a few more small steps.First of all, she determined she needed to learn more about home-based businesses, how to write a business plan and where to network with people who could help her. Those activities Leda found straightforward and she was able to use her strengths in service of her larger goals. With some small yet significant accomplishments under her belt, she started to understand that starting a business wasn't about not feeling afraid, it was about managing the fears as they came up.And it was also about letting go of the idea that she was a person who could not do this; with every small success, she learned that she actually had abilities to run her own show. With this, her sense of who she was becoming - a small business owner - was emerging.Still, her biggest obstacle was her own fear of stepping "into the void" as she described it and with that, challenging that deep belief that she was not entrepreneurial or "good at business" and without colleagues milling around her desk, she would always be alone. So, in order to be successful, Leda realized she needed to think beyond implementing her business plan.To fully realize her dream, she needed to create the conditions for her success, with the most important condition being what she called her "Fear Management Plan." Here are some of the things she put on that list..If you don't know something, don't be afraid to ask.Assume that people want to help.Pick up the phone! Surround yourself with successful people who face similar fears and learn from them.Join a networking group or attend seminars for small business owners.Analyse the fear and look for the underlying assumption you are making.Ask if your assumption is true. For instance, "If I try this, I will fail" is not necessarily true.More likely is. "If I try this, I will feel uncomfortable but I will learn something.".Find new ways to use your strengths in support of your goals. If you are great at building a community, focus there and let go of the idea that you have to do something unpleasant, such as cold-calling, to be successful. Finally, as the book says, Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway. With every small success - and with every setback - Leda not only learned the ropes of running a business, she also learned that being resilient in the face of fear was a major contributor to her meeting her goals. Now a successful small business owner who vows to never go back to "work," Leda admits that fear is still with her every time she is about to reach for a new goal. The difference now, however, is she has a plan to deal with it.If you are contemplating a change in job or a new career, steal a page from Leda's book and figure out what strategies will help you face your fears. If there is something you really want to do with you life, don't let your fears steal it away from you.Work with a coach, a friend or a mentor to face what's getting in the way.You will likely find that at core, your dreams are stronger than your fears, if you just give them a chance.

Forgiveness: The Gift of Setting Yourself Free

Forgiveness: The Gift of Setting Yourself Free

To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you." - Lewis B.Smedes.Negative emotions consume you. They keep you from experiencing the good you desire, the good that is rightfully yours.Stored up negative emotions of anger, regret, resentment, and sorrow can keep you stuck in the past; dwelling on the past can adversely affect your health, and your life.Unless you let it go.Choose to forgive.Your mind is wandering now. You're thinking, "Why should I forgive her? She said some pretty cruel things about me and I did nothing wrong.".Drifting through the past, you say to yourself, "He cheated on me.Why should I forgive him?".Bad memories of your childhood surface as you argue, "My father abandoned me! He doesn't deserve my forgiveness.".And I say to you, "It's not about them. It's about you.".When you consciously choose the act of forgiveness, you release yourself from the burden of the past; from the grip those circumstances have on you.By releasing yourself of anger, pain, and resentment, you free your energy allowing you to be present in the here and now. And, that's where your happiness is - in the here and now. When you forgive you give yourself the gift of happiness, the gift of life."Wait.I'm the victim here," you say convincingly. And I say to you, "Only if you choose to be.".Your anger and resentment towards others is hurting YOU more than it is hurting them. They can't feel your pain or anger. If you have been playing the role of victim, you have only tainted your life, not theirs. They have moved on.You can move on too.You can break the cycle by choosing forgiveness. The truth is.I know this because I'm not perfect.I've been guilty of holding on to old resentments, habits and circumstances.I was stuck in negative emotions.I was, in fact, my own obstacle to living the life I wanted to live.Once I realized this and finally let it go, I found myself in a much more peaceful place. You may think it's your significant other, your mother-in-law, your friend, your sister or your father who created the condition you're stuck in.But admit it.You have more power than you realize.Reclaim your power; don't give it all away to someone else. And let's get one thing clear here. When you choose forgiveness, it doesn't have to mean you forget. It doesn't mean that you are in agreement with the past.It simply means that you release the burden and move on.It's not about denying a person's unacceptable actions; it's not about condoning hurtful behavior.Forgiveness does not mean that you need to resume a relationship with the person who brought you pain, and it certainly doesn't mean that you should return to (or stay in) a harmful or abusive relationship.Forgiveness is about taking your lessons with you, as you move on with your life. It's about releasing yourself and others from emotional debts and obligations. You can continue to hold on to the past. You can grasp tightly to the pain and resentment. You can choose to be angry and miserable.Nobody's stopping you.And I say to you, "It's just not worth it.Let it go.Put yourself back in the driver's seat.".When you choose to forgive, you are choosing to live in a peaceful state of mind. You are ridding yourself of old destructive thought patterns.Forgiveness is recognizing that everyone is doing their best given the combination of childhood nurturing, conditions, and interpretations of their life experiences. The true miracle of forgiveness takes place on the inside, with an inner shift. But the results of this inner shift will be seen in incredible ways through external situations once you choose forgiveness. It is a choice that frees you to live your life fully. In joy and in peace.THE BURDEN. A Short Story of Forgiveness. Two monks were returning to the monastery in the evening. It had rained and there were puddles of water on the roadsides. At one place a beautiful young woman was standing unable to walk across because of a puddle of water. The elder of the two monks went up to her, lifted her and left her on the other side of the road, and continued his way to the monastery. In the evening the younger monk came to the elder monk and said, "Sir, as monks, we cannot touch a woman.".The elder monk answered, "Yes, brother.".Then the younger monk asks, "But then Sir, why is it that you lifted that woman on the roadside?".The elder monk smiled at him and told him, "I left her on the other side of the road, but you are still carrying her.".Ask yourself - What burdens are you still carrying? Is it getting too heavy to bear?In the study of Metaphysics, I've learned an empowering lesson.LIFE IS ALWAYS FOR US, NEVER AGAINST US.It is important to look for the blessing in all circumstances.Look at what the situation is calling forth from us, and then finally, release and let go.Forgive.What memories of the past still cause you to feel pain, resentment, anger, or sadness? What negative thoughts and emotions are you tightly hanging on to?Who are you unwilling to forgive? Are you angry at someone else, or perhaps angry with yourself?Change your mind.Choose to Forgive. Here are some helpful steps in releasing and letting go of the past.Acknowledge your experience by being true to your feelings and recognizing your hurt, pain, anger, resentment and any fears or doubts from your experience. To do this, take a look back at your life and remember three people you haven't been able to forgive. One of these three people could very well be yourself (it was for me).Grab your journal or a spiral notebook, and list these three people, recalling the circumstance or event, and write about your feelings, judgments, hurt, anger, pain and resentment. Now pinpoint any part you may have had in this situation, showing yourself compassion in the process, and recognizing insights.Your part in the situation could have been something as simple as holding on to the anger and resentment for too long.If this is the case, ask yourself to let go of the anger now.It no longer serves you.Remember, you are setting yourself free in the process of forgiveness, by choosing love over fear.Choose one of the people on your list of three, and write a letter to him/her.This letter is not to be sent, but to help you in healing through forgiveness. Here's an outline to get you started..1.Describe the event, how it caused you pain, and how it is still affecting you.I used phrases such as, "It hurt me when.," or "I feel angry that you.," or "I'm still feeling.".2.Identify the part you played and any insights you have regarding the situation.Such as, "I am sorry that I.," or "I realize my part of.," or "I have learned that.".3.Write about what you would like to have experienced."I would have liked for.," or "I deserved to.," or "What I really wanted was.".4.Let it go by writing about your release of this pain as if you are erasing it from your mind."I forgive you for.," or "I know that.," or "I understand that.".5.Show gratitude by recognizing how this experience has contributed to your life, or what you have learned."I appreciate that.," or "What you taught me was.," or "I gained ____ from this experience.".6.To end your letter and complete the process of releasing and letting go, use phrases such as, "With love," or "Sending you many blessings." Sign your name. When writing this letter, allow yourself to write freely. It's for your eyes only.Grammar and punctuation doesn't matter.Just write.Let the words flow. And, remember, you are not condoning this person's behavior or actions. You are freeing yourself from painful negative emotions that keep you stuck in the turmoil of the past. You are choosing to tell yourself a new story through the process of forgiveness. This is for you, not them. Finally, in this process of forgiveness, your thoughts play a huge role because your thoughts create your feelings. The power lies in changing your thoughts to create positive feelings because this shifts your energy.Once your energy is shifted, every person around you will notice the 'new' you.Once you release the heavy burden you were carrying, you will understand and experience the gift of setting yourself free through the process of forgiveness.

The Gift of Fear: And Other Survival Signals That Protect Us from Violence

          Product Description

The man whom Oprah Winfrey calls "the nation's leading expert on violent behavior" shows how to spot even subtle signs of danger before it's too late. Abridged. 3 CDs.

          Amazon.com Review

Each hour, 75 women are raped in the United States, and every few seconds, a woman is beaten. Each day, 400 Americans suffer shooting injuries, and another 1,100 face criminals armed with guns. Author Gavin de Becker says victims of violent behavior usually feel a sense of fear before any threat or violence takes place. They may distrust the fear, or it may impel them to some action that saves their lives. A leading expert on predicting violent behavior, de Becker believes we can all learn to recognize these signals of the "universal code of violence," and use them as tools to help us survive. The book teaches how to identify the warning signals of a potential attacker and recommends strategies for dealing with the problem before it becomes life threatening. The case studies are gripping and suspenseful, and include tactics for dealing with similar situations.

People don't just "snap" and become violent, says de Becker, whose clients include federal government agencies, celebrities, police departments, and shelters for battered women. "There is a process as observable, and often as predictable, as water coming to a boil." Learning to predict violence is the cornerstone to preventing it. De Becker is a master of the psychology of violence, and his advice may save your life. --Joan Price

A Q&A with Gavin de Becker

Question: In today’s world, where terror and tragedy seem omnipresent, the fear of violence never seems more heightened. Is the world a more violent place than it ever has been?

Gavin de Becker : Your question contains much of the answer: today’s world, "where terror and tragedy seem omnipresent..." The key word is "seem." When TV news coverage presents so much on these topics, it elevates the perception of terrorism and tragedy way beyond the reality. In every major city, TV news creates forty hours of original production every day, most of it composed and presented to get our attention with fear. Hence an incident on an airplane in which a man fails to do any damage is treated as if the make-shift bomb actually exploded. It didn’t. Imagine having a near miss in your car, avoiding what would have been a serious collision--and then talking about every hour for months after the fact. Welcome to TV news.

To the second part of your question, No, the world is not a more violent place than it has ever been, however we live as if it were. The U.S. is the most powerful nation in world history--and also the most afraid.

Question: You were just on the Oprah show discussing spousal homicide--can you talk about the show, and whether spousal homicide is a growing epidemic?

Gavin de Becker: Through two shows Oprah dedicated to the topic, we’re conveying a great deal of new information, and most of all, Oprah’s announcement that a MOSAIC assessment system developed by my firm will be made available to any person who wants to use it, at no cost, via her website. This will allow anyone to diagnose a relationship to determine if it has the combination of factors most associated with escalated violence, and spousal homicide. Is spousal homicide increasing? It is not; however, the reality is more disturbing than an increase: Spousal homicide has remained a constant in our lives, such that every four hours at least one woman is killed in America by a husband or boyfriend. That uninterrupted and sad statistic can be interrupted and changed--because as explored in The Gift of Fear, spousal homicide is the single most preventable serious crime in America--largely owing to that fact that it always occurs after many warning signs, and after several people are aware of the risk.

Question: Your bestselling book The Gift of Fear gives many examples to help readers recognize what you call pre-incident indicators (PINS) of violence. What role does intuition play in recognizing these signals?

Gavin de Becker: Like every creature on earth, we have an extraordinary defense resource: We don’t have the sharpest claws and strongest jaws--but we do have the biggest brains, and intuition is the most impressive process of these brains. It might be hard to accept its importance because intuition is often described as emotional, unreasonable, or inexplicable. Husbands chide their wives about "feminine intuition" and don’t take it seriously. If intuition is used by a woman to explain some choice she made or a concern she can’t let go of, men roll their eyes and write it off. We much prefer logic, the grounded, explainable, unemotional thought process that ends in a supportable conclusion. In fact, Americans worship logic, even when it’s wrong, and deny intuition, even when it’s right. Men, of course, have their own version of intuition, not so light and inconsequential, they tell themselves, as that feminine stuff. Theirs is more viscerally named a "gut feeling," but whatever name we use, it isn’t just a feeling. It is a process more extraordinary and ultimately more logical in the natural order than the most fantastic computer calculation. It is our most complex cognitive process and, at the same time, the simplest.

Intuition connects us to the natural world and to our nature. It carries us to predictions we will later marvel at. "Somehow I knew," we will say about the chance meeting we predicted, or about the unexpected phone call from a distant friend, or the unlikely turnaround in someone’s behavior, or about the violence we steered clear of, or, too often, the violence we elected not to steer clear of. The Gift of Fear offers strategies that help us recognize the signals of intuition--and helps us avoid denial, which is the enemy of safety.

Question: Your latest book, Just 2 Seconds, has been called a "masterpiece" of analysis on the art of preventing assassination. It contains an entire compendium of attacks on protected persons across the globe. What motivated you to put together such a definitive reference? What tenets can be applied to one’s everyday life?

Gavin de Becker: Most of all, we wrote the book we needed. My co-authors and I had long looked for an extensive collection of attack summaries from which important new insights could be harvested. Unable to find it, we committed to do the work ourselves, eventually collecting more than 1400 cases to analyze. Many new insights and concepts emerged from the study, and the one most applicable to day to day life, even for people who are not living with unusual risks, is to be in the present; pre-sent, as it were. Now is the only time anything ever happens--now is where the action is. All focus on anything outside the Now (the past, memory, the future, fantasy) detracts focus from what’s actually happening in your environment. Human being have the capacity to look right at something and not see it, and in studying such a crisp event--the few seconds during which assassinations have occurred--Just 2 Seconds aims to enhance the reader’s ability to see the value of the present moment.

Ways To Overcome Your Fear of Death

Ways To Overcome Your Fear of Death

All the people in the world have something in common - they're all going to die some day.Humans always like to point out how they're a dominant species on earth in terms of intelligence.Dominant over plants and animals.Although intelligence is a great gift, there are cases when it can become a curse. One of those cases is the fear of death.Intelligence always brings along self awareness and self awareness is the main cause of our fear of death. We are aware of our own existence, but we are also aware that it will end. Why? Because death is very real.Every day we witness people dying of old age.The logical conclusion would be that we are also going to grow old and die someday. So that's what fuels our fear of death.Reality.The fear of death is perfectly normal. It's common to all people and it's even desirable, because if you don't fear death, that means that something is not right with you.Death is inevitable and so is the fear of it.So, you can choose two ways of coping with it.The first way is to think about death in a negative way and to panic like 'I won't be alive anymore, OMG what am I going to do?'.This way causes depression and self pity. This is not a good way to cope with death because it makes you unhappy while you're still alive. The second way (the right way) would be to understand that death is one of the most important parts of life. You have to die.You have to die because this is the nature's way of clearing the old and making way for the new.Try to imagine that life is like a train.A train of life that never stops and goes forever. Now imagine that you have won the 'gift of life' train ticket on the 'the lottery of life' and that you have boarded on the train. Now, as we all know, train tickets don't last forever so you'll have to get off the train at some point in the future.Well, death is that moment when you walk off the train. The point of this example is to understand life as a GIFT that has been given to us.In other words, don't be sad because you're going to die, but be happy because you were given the chance to live in the first place! Life is a great gift and we should all be thankful for it.All the living people on earth are born as winners. You are also a born winner. Why? Because out of the 500 million sperm cells that your father has ejaculated, only you were strong enough to swim to your mom's egg cell. You need to consider yourself as a tiny wheel in the clock of life. You are very tiny, but without you the clock would not be the same. Also you need to know that when we die, all the material stuff that makes up our bodies is used to create new life. So, we're in fact living on in other organisms, plants and animals and even other people. We are just not alive in our current form anymore.Besides, why would you want to live forever? Imagine if you were only a 100 year old. What would you do? Your friends are gone.Your husband/wife is dead.Your entire generation is dead.Your body is weak and you feel alone. All of that is a nature's way to say 'It's time to go' because death is a perfectly normal process in a cycle of life. It's just very inconvenient that we (humans) are smart enough to be aware of it.Although the fear of death is perfectly normal, try not to think about death, but enjoy every second of your life.Because you have only got one.

Are You Should-ing on Yourself Again?

Are You Should-ing on Yourself Again?

"I should have more money"."I should be further along in my career"."I should have gotten that job"."I should be healthy"."I should have my retirement in place"."I should be in school"."I should finish school"."I should be married"."I should get a divorce"."I should lose weight"."I should have said something in the meeting"."I should have just shut up".These are just a few ways that our mind is constantly "should-ing" on ourselves.Because we have over 60,000 thoughts a day, it's impossible to examine each thought to see which ones are "should-ing".So how do you get relief from the "should-ing" syndrome? How do you catch yourself "should-ing"?Whenever you have a stressful thought, stop.Examine the thought and ask yourself, "Is that true?" "Is that absolutely true?".The thoughts that give us the most pain, the most suffering, are often the ones that tell us "You should." or "You shouldn't.".Where do they come from?Usually from our past experiences; what society tells us to do or don't do; advertisers; our parents; friends; relatives; or the media. You don't have to be a victim any longer. When the stressful thought comes up, instead of pushing it down, running from it, or fighting it, just ask yourself, "Is this the truth?".For example, when someone ignores you at work or school, and doesn't speak to you.The mind will spin a story."They don't like me." "Maybe it's something I said last week." "Did they hear something about me?".Notice how the mind creates a scenario that is more colorful and elaborate than a blockbuster movie.Instead of trying to suppress the thoughts, ask yourself, "Is that the truth?" "Do I know that for sure?".The mind is doing what the mind does.It questions everything. But, you don't have to be dragged behind the mind like a rider falling off a horse. You are the master of your mind. You can decide which thoughts you are going to entertain. You can decide to let the stressful thoughts go by doing a direct inquiry."What is going on here?" "What am I believing?" "Is it true?".Socrates said, "An unexamined life is not worth living.".What he was saying is that we follow beliefs and thoughts that lead us down the wrong path.We don't stop to think, "Is this the best thing for me to do." "Am I following the crowd?" "Am I following what society says I should do, instead of what is good for me?".Gangaji, a wonderful teacher said this, "Society is a cult.".When you stop to think of it, that's true.We drink the kool-aid that society gives us, and follow along without examining beliefs that we swallow.Examine those stressful thoughts.Ask yourself..Is it really necessary to have a body of a 16 year-old when I'm over 30?Will I have loads of friends if I drink a certain beer? Will I be loved if I wear the right clothes? Will my world crumble if Senator Romney becomes president? Will my world crumble if President Obama remains in office? These types of ideas that society gives us constantly become thoughts in our head. And, if we don't examine them, they become beliefs.Beliefs, the wrong beliefs, become fears. Before you know it, you're living in fear all because of what you heard in the media, a friend told you, or a family member's fears they project onto you.We can get so tangled up in other people's beliefs that we don't even realize that our stressful thoughts were not coming from us.They came from other people. But, when they are not examined, they become our beliefs, and then, it doesn't matter where they came from because we have embodied them. It's an endless circle. But that circle can be broken, by inquiring about a thought.Stop.Ask yourself "Is that the absolute truth?".Stay awake!

Are You Should-ing on Yourself Again?
