Pay Attention to Your Intuition to Stay Safe

Pay Attention to Your Intuition to Stay Safe

You can't count the times police officers and others have talked to victims and heard the lines, "I knew something wasn't right about him," or "I had this feeling." Many times our intuition is telling us important messages to save our lives, and instead of listening, we ignore the feeling, or worse yet, rationalize it away as being "nothing," or being "silly." After all, we don't want to offend the person that triggered a funny feeling, and we certainly don't want to be embarrassed by making something out of nothing at all. This kind of thinking has gotten many people hurt and killed. Our intuition is a built in survival system, and we must learn to listen to it to help ensure our safety. Some guys don't like the word intuition, so instead, think of listening to your gut.If you have a gut feeling something is wrong, it probably is.One of the leading researchers on this topic is Gavin De Becker.I strongly recommend everyone read his book "The Gift of Fear. And Other Survival Signals That Protect Us From Violence." I actually give copies of this book out during my safety and self-defense presentations, and find that he provides many useful suggestions and quite eye opening examples. And one of the key things De Becker teaches is to pay attention to your intuition. It will help you remain safe and just might save your life. What we often fail to realize is that there are many little signals that our brain is picking up that combine to trigger our intuition to send that little message that something is not quite right. There is a reason you don't feel comfortable or safe near certain people. There is a reason something deep inside is telling you not to do something or not to go someplace. It's imperative that you learn to listen to these, and pay attention to them.Don't dismiss these warning feelings as nonsense, paranoia, or simply nothing.Pay attention and take action to keep yourself safe. What if you are wrong? So what? You are safe, right? What if your feeling is right and you are wrong by ignoring it? That's the question, because once you ignore it and become a victim, it may be too late.I teach the Korean martial art of hapkido and realistic self-defense techniques. However, the most important thing a person can do to "defend" themselves or remain safe, is not through fighting, but by being aware and avoiding violence in the first place.Part of awareness is paying attention to your built in warning signals, or in other words, your intuition. So the next time that little voice in your head starts to tell you something, especially regarding your safety, listen to it.Your life may depend on it.
