The body of Christ cannot function effectively without the proper operation of spiritual gifts in the church.There is a sharp controversy about the gifts of the spirit and the initial evidence of being filled with the baptism of the Holy Ghost.The initial evidence of being filled with the Holy Ghost is to speak in unknown tongues as the spirit gives utterance.This is the sign that you've received the same experience that the Apostles and the early church had.See Acts 10. 45-47.The Lord has poured out his spirit upon millions of souls worldwide, across all denominational boundaries.The problem is the lack of the functionality of these spiritual gifts in the church.It's the indwelling spirit which you received, that births in your life spiritual gifts as you understand and learn to make yourself available to him.In Epistle to the Corinthians 12, there are nine gifts of the spirit listed.Here are four guiding principle regarding spiritual gifts in the church..1.Be a willing hungry vessel.See 2 Timothy 2.20-21.Since this is a spiritual exercise, the effectiveness of his operation depends on the level of your consecration.The reason we don't witness much of the operation of the gifts of the Spirit, is that very few are willing to pay the price.Lack of the effective operation of spiritual gifts in the church has brought about the proliferation of worldly means to attract people to Jesus Christ.When the early church preached with the demonstration of the gifts of the spirit thousands were drawn to Christ as they beheld the signs and wonders.Acts 3.1-7.2.Understand the purpose of the gifts.The gifts of the spirit is given to benefit the body of Christ and it isn't for personal gratification or status.We read, "And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.But the manifestation of the spirit is given to every man to profit withal" (1 Corinthians 12. 6-7, KJV).Spiritual gifts in the church must be understood by individual members of the body of Christ.God can only do as much as we allow him to do.3.Understand the operation of the gifts.If you desire to be used by the spirit of God, you've to be sensitive to the working of the gifts in the church.The spiritual gifts tend to operate more effectively in an atmosphere of unity, worship and praise; also after we've given ourselves to prayers and fasting.4.Interdependence of the gifts.We read, "But all these worketh that one and self same spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body. so also is Christ" (1 Corinthians 12. 11-12, KJV).None of us is self-sufficient in the body of Christ.Your gift complements another believer's gift to produce maximum result.The Lord didn't give a lone gift.We all depend on each other.Spiritual gifts in the church are given to promote the cause of Christ not ours.The essence therefore is to be a humble and willing vessel for his glory.
