There is a wide variety of information available today on how to avoid being a crime victim.While this information is very useful, these information sources often neglect the most important tool in preventing a crime - The subconscious mind.The mind can be divided into two parts. The conscious and the subconscious.The conscious mind process information we need to deal with in the present moment.This includes the sights, sounds and smells around us, information we are currently using or working to learn, and emotions we are feeling regarding a present situation.The subconscious mind, on the other hand, processes all sensory and cognitive information that we receive over the course of our life.The conscious mind would not be able to focus on daily present day activities with this much information, so it filters out the majority of the information provided by the subconscious mind.The subconscious mind however continues to store and process this information and can communicate it with the conscious mind when necessary.This is the reason we are able to recall childhood memories when did not even know were still with us.It is also the reason a traumatic even can give us nightmares, despite or attempts to forget the event.One explanation for the feeling of Dj vu - the feeling that we have been to a certain place before, even though we haven't is that the subconscious mind is communicating memories of sights, smells, and memories of past experiences that are familiar to what your are experiencing at the present moment.Often these messages from the subconscious mind come in the form of "vibes" also known as intuition.Unfortunately the pride we feel in the intellect given to us by our conscious mind often causes us to ignore this intuition.This is especially true when a person is faced with a dangerous situation.Too often people allow themselves to remain in dangerous situations for fear of appearing paranoid.In his book "The Gift of Fear" author Gavin de Becker interviewed several crime victims who admitted that they had a bad feeling about a person or situation right before they became a crime victim but did nothing because they could not logically explain the feeling.Remember just like pain is the body's way of warning us that something is wrong, fear is the mind's way of warning us of a bad situation.Listen to that feeling.Many people become more afraid of being rude, or paranoid than the possible danger in which they may be placing themselves.If someone in the elevator makes you uncomfortable do not get in.If a quiet parking lot makes you feel uneasy, go to a public place and ask for a security guard.Call someone to pick you up.Take a cab home or if necessary call the police.If someone talking to you is making you feel guarded end the conversation and walk away.If polite attempts to end the conversation fail become assertive and demand to be left alone.If you believe you are in trouble do not be afraid to attract attention to yourself in any way necessary to get help.There are many personal alarms on the market today that can emit ear piercing noise that will deter an assailant as well as draw the attention of bystanders.Understanding that you do not have to explain your feelings in order to act on them can go a long way in preventing you from becoming a victim.
